Bernie Ecclestone issues praise for Formula E as series reveals new trophy

Formula E’s latest round took place in Brazil at the weekend, as the Sao Paulo E-Prix provided great entertainment right up until the final corners.

It was Sam Bird who took a stunning victory as he ousted Mitch Evans over the final corners of the last lap, whilst Oliver Rowland also produced a brilliant last lap drive to snatch a podium finish ahead of Jake Dennis and Pascal Wehrlein.

The championship continues to entertain, and one of the impressed onlookers at the weekend was former Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

Speaking in Sao Paulo, he said:

“10 years ago, I thought the first race would be the last, so I’m very pleased to see it’s something quite super – technically, it’s at a Formula 1’s level. It’s the first race I’ve been to, and it looks super, super, super”.

Also over the weekend, the series revealed a new Manufacturers’ Trophy, which will be handed to the highest-scoring manufacturer within the championship at the end of the season.

Not to be confused with the Teams’ Championship, which is up for grabs for all the teams on the grid, this new trophy will be awarded to the highest-scoring manufacturer – of which there are six – at the end of the season.

Electric Racing Technologies, Jaguar, Mahindra Racing, Nissan, Porsche, and STELLANTIS, power the 11 teams on the grid, and the scoring for this trophy mirrors that of the Teams Championship, with points awarded based on the performance of each manufacturer’s two highest-scoring cars in every race. Points for Pole Position and the Fastest Lap are also factored into the totals.
